Storyteller

This is a Karee tree we found on a farm close to Graaff Reinet in the Karoo. We had to cut it in two to transport it. This is the bottom part where the roots grew.

Karee is a very heavy, hard wood. I used mostly a chisel to form the sculpture, trying to use power tools is a waste of time on this wood.

There is a hole running all the way up in the center of the tree. Here I started opening the hole to form part of the finished sculpture.

Here I poured liquid polish on the wood to bring out the colours. Karee has a warm red colour, contrasted with the rich, black bark,

Here I stood the sculpture upright, so you can feel the movement and the balance.
